The dandelion is a common flowering weed that grows extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Because of its highly invasive nature, the dietary and medicinal benefits of the dandelion are frequently overlooked despite its long history of use by many cultures. The flowers, leaves and roots of the dandelion all have uses. Dandelion has a strong bitter taste and can be prepared in salads or brewed into a tea. Dandelion teas are also available commercially.

    Nutritional Content

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, dandelions are a rich source of vitamins A, B complex, C, and D. The flower also provides the minerals iron, potassium, and zinc. Dandelions also supply several plant chemicals which may have a variety of immune-boosting benefits but more research is needed to be sure.

    Detoxification

The vitamins contained in dandelion leaves and roots are all potent antioxidants with a wide variety of potential health benefits. While each compound has specific uses in the body, all of these chemicals help to remove free radicals and other toxins. Folk medicine uses dandelion leaves as a liver tonic. These antioxidants may also help to improve overall cardiovascular health and reduce cholesterol.

    Weight Loss Potential

Dandelion root is a common supplement used by bodybuilders and other athletes. The root is a potent diuretic that can quickly reduce water weight. A study published in the "Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" found that ingestion of dandelion tea increased both frequency and volume of urination. The researchers stated that more research was necessary to determine an exact dosage.
