The Dark Knight is the second film in Christopher Nolan’s reboot of the Batman franchise for Warner
Bros. It is also one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time in the United States, and
stars Christian Bale, returning as The Dark Knight himself. With Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon,
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent a.k.a. Two-Face, and Heath Ledger as The
Joker, in one of his final performances on film.
Heath Ledger won almost twenty posthumous awards for his role as The Joker, a role that will
possibly go down as the actor’s best performance. Ledger died at the age of 28 of a drug overdose,
after completing only thirty minutes of footage for the film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
The film also won a little over half of their nominations at Spike TV’s annual Scream Awards, along
with a couple of Academy Awards as well.
This is film is a sequel to Batman Begins, and is considered the ultimate definition of Batman and
Bruce Wayne onscreen. It shall be followed by another sequel entitled The Dark Knight Rises, which
is expected to be the final film featuring Christopher Nolan as writer and director, along with
Christian Bale playing the title role. Also, it also remains to be seen whether or not this film
will stand up to the standard The Dark Knight has set. No matter what the future holds for the Batman franchise, this film will stand the test of time as one of the best interpretation of the character and his rivalry with The Joker, bar none.
