Batman Begins is the film that started Christopher Nolan’s official reboot of the Batman franchise
for Warner Bros. nearly a decade after the disastrous Batman and Robin killed the character’s appeal
at the box office. This version stars Christian Bale in his first appearance as the caped crusader,
along with Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy. This film details the very beginnings of Bruce Wayne’s
years as Batman and his training to avenge his parents’ death.
The film won three Saturn awards, one for Christian Bale — Best Actor, Best Fantasy Film, and Best
Writing — Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. It also won Best Film for the fan based Total Film
magazine. While it was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, but the film and
its cinematographer Wally Pfister, did not win. The film was successful at the box office, but did
nothing compared to its sequel, The Dark Knight.
This film istelf is a remake of every Batman film that came before, except the character and his
mythology are stripped down and return to their origins. It erases all of the campiness that tainted
Batman and Bruce Wayne in the filmgoers’ minds after the failure of Batman and Robin with George
Clooney and Chris O’Donnell. This film also spawned an even bigger sequel in The Dark Knight and the
upcoming film The Dark Knight Rises. Will this film be a logical conclusion to the story Nolan and Goyer started with Batman Begins? Only time will tell if this last installment can match the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight at the box office.
