Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver, and is directed by
James Cameron. The film revolves around a branch of Earth’s military which is investigating the
Na’vi moon of Pandora through virtual reality based means. A corporate funded peace mission to
establish communication and relations between the two races. Even though military advisor Colonel
Quaritch believes they are a threat to the human race and tries to destroy them.
This film won three Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Director
for James Cameron. Cameron and his production crew also won numerous other awards in these categories for different organizations, and even won Best Screenplay from the Writer’s Guild of
America. The film also swept the Empire Awards, including wins for Cameron, his business partner
Jon Landau, Sam Worthington, and one of many acting awards for Zoe Saldana.
It has only been a year and a half since the release of Avatar, but there are plans for two sequels
to this mega hit blockbuster. These sequels are expected to expand on the Avatar universe and have a
much faster pace than the first film. A few cast members have signed on, and James Cameron plans to
have the sequels filmed at a frame rate higher than the industry standard of 24 frames per second to
give a more heightened sense of reality to the film. Will James Cameron repeat the massive success of Avatar with these two sequels? Sequels are not often as successful as the original, but this remains to be seen for the Avatar franchise.
