Zinc Lozenges and Cold Treatment Q: Do zinc lozenges really treat colds?

0

Dr. Donnica: Actors and singers have relied on zinc lozenges for years to treat colds and sore throats, but I have to admit I was skeptical when a singer recommended that I try them once when I had a cold. But the prestigious medical journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, has recently reported (10/4/00) the results of a double-blind, placebo controlled study which showed that the use of zinc lozenges was associated with reduced duration and severity of cold symptoms, especially cough, in adults who used one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours while awake as long as they had cold symptoms.
