your cage tested very toxic at 3,200 ppm for lead but your Umbies blood tests came back as zero for lead in her blood stream. How can that be?
A. The toxic cage that I have is a double Macaw which affords my Umbie plenty of room. I have in her cage many toys, perches, swings, rope bridges, foraging areas and so on. She does not chew on the bars on this cage because she is offered many other things to do besides chew on the bars. Also my cage is new (since April of 2007) and there are no signs of wear or chewing on the bars anywhere. So it is assumed that she has not ingested any of the toxins. But be aware – like all things – in time the cage will show signs of wear – and my Umbie might chew on the bars and chip off paint and ingest it while my back is turned. Remember – even an Umbie can crack Brazil nuts with ease and the bigger birds such as Macaws can snap cage bar welds as easily as you can snap a toothpick.
