You write about gay characters in a generally sympathetic way, and yet you’re heterosexual — isn’t that difficult?
No, of course it isn’t difficult. The gay people I know are one and all absolutely endearing – I mean, they are wickedly smart, amazingly verbal, astonishingly talented, and really good company. Thinking back to what elementary school and high school were like, I think that it probably takes a great deal of courage to grow up gay in this country. This reflection always contributes a degree of admiration to my relationships with gay men and women.
