You said that lutein helps make pigment. What exactly does that mean?
There is a very rich pigment that covers the back of the eye. This pigment is protective. Lutein is important because it determines the thickness of the yellow macular pigment layer. Yellow lutein is located in a layer covering the all important rods and cones of the retina. Thus this layer protects these highly sensitive areas from the damage of unfiltered sunlight. The thicker and richer this layer becomes, the more protection that is offered against the oxidative damage of sunlight.
