Yesterday, I made a salad of iceberg, tomatoes, onions and green pepper… It wasn good, but here comes my question: Why did it smell absolutely horrible after only 20 minutes in the refrigerator?

Green pepper was the culprit. The smell of green pepper is so pervasive that we can detect 1 molecule of it in 3 trillion others. To give you some idea of scale, it means if you were to put one single drop of pure scent in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, you would be able to smell clearly the aroma of green pepper. Anything else left in proximity with green pepper will absorb the green pepper smell, so the “awful” odour you detected was probably everything else in the refrigerator combined with green pepper.
