I’m a Christian and I’m telling y’all, Darwin did not renounce evolution. He waited most of his life before publishing his theory, because he knew it would create a firestorm. He came up with his ideas as a young man, after a voyage on the Beagle, to the Galapagos Islands. His notebooks indicate this. But he did not publish his first major book, On the Origin of Species, until decades later. Even then, he only did so because another man who was much younger went ahead a published a much shorter work saying the same thing. He knew that this other man would essentially be crucified in the press, so he finally came out with his monumental work, provided the real evidence for the theory. So he is widely credited with the theory of evolution, although he was not really alone. He dared not put into that first book the notion that humans, too, evolved.
