My Answer: Definitely. Total no-brainer. The Hildreth House site is a town treasure and needs full protection. Obviously, the Historical Commission is not going to permit a dangerous situation to occur that would impede the fire department. More likely is that someone will try to switch the original windows with crappy vinyl replacements, or raze it in order to make room for a contemporary affordable housing complex. It is highly regrettable that it is currently not in the historic district. Most people who learn this are rightfully concerned and outraged. 3. Would you support the development of affordable housing on the Hildreth House property? My answer: No way. Putting affordable housing on this site would destroy a beautiful place. It would be a last-resort defensive tactic against the threat of 40b development, and an ultimate admission of defeat at the hands of the state’s unfair housing laws and unscrupulous developers.
