For a large number of people thirteen isn’t an unlucky number at all. It is only in certain western countries that thirteen is considered unlucky. In the case of American Idol, they are just using it as a gimmick. It’s happening more and more in “reality shows”. There are only supposed to be X places, but amazingly enough X+1 places are awarded. In the case of American Idol, the media is making a big thing of thirteen, which is all good, free advertising.
I believe so that thirteen isn’t necessarily an unlucky number in American Idol. Adding another worthy participant to the usual TOP 12 is no way unlucky. If one deserves to be there, then he/she should be there. The number of finalists does not degraded the show. It has been one of the most successful US TV show and it will continue to be one regardless of the number of finalists. Sources: The entry is my own opinion.
