Would you rather go to diner with Bela Lugosi or Boris Karloff?
I’d pick Boris Karloff (born William Henry Pratt). Why? I’ve been a fan of his since I was a kid. I loved his narrations of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Peter and the Wolf” – the latter being the best version of that classic ever recorded, in my opinion. Karloff’s portrayal of the Monster in the Frankenstein movies was brilliant, and almost all of his work – even the trashier stuff – was great. He was a damned good actor. It was a thrill to see him even in relatively small parts like “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. Plus, Karloff was a really nice guy. He loved children, and did a lot to help them. He was famous for charity work, too. Lastly (and this may sound weird) Karloff looked a lot like my grandfather. I mean, the resemblance was startling. I don’t have anything bad to say about poor old Bela Lugosi. He was a good actor, and his Dracula was undoubtedly classic. Plus his version of Ygor in Son of Frankenstein was awesome.
