Would you rather get a dog that is a shar pei or chow chow?
A Chow. They are good loyal dogs. Not jumpy like many breeds. However, you can’t be wishy-washy with a Chow Chow. Be the leader or he’ll throw a coup. Grooming is a MUST on these dogs, not a suggestion. Plus, you need to start early, getting him use to strangers messing with his hair. I had a great black Chow Chow as a rescue dog once, fantastic dogs. The black ones seem a little more true to the breed’s original temperment. The reds were overbred for many years and some have become more aggressive. Shar Pei–have skin issues. You’ll be in and out of the vet. Plus, they are a hard to handle breed. Very headstrong. Every one I’ve ever met was a difficult dog. The owners love them but it was WORK. Plus, you need to clean those wrinkles and check for infections/rashes weekly. Either is going to be a challenging dog. I’d go with a black Chow Chow myself. Be the leader, get him professionally groomed. Mats in the under coat cause some Chow issues. They get skin infections from being imprope
