The Carlyle Group said on Tuesday that Louis V. Gerstner Jr., the former I.B.M. chief who became the private equity firm’s chairman five years ago, would step down from that post on Sept. 30. Mr. Gerstner, 66, will remain a senior adviser to its buyout funds, Carlyle said in a statement. The firm did not name a successor. Before joining Carlyle in January 2003, Mr. Gerstner worked as I.B.M.’s chairman and chief executive from 1993 through 2002. ”Initially, I committed to be chairman of Carlyle for one year,” Mr. Gerstner said in a statement. ”But year after year I continued to be impressed with Carlyle’s value creation model and its efforts to globalize the firm. However, at this point in my life, I have a number of goals and interests yet to fulfill, requiring me to step back at Carlyle.” In a statement, Daniel A.
