Would The Nikkon 50mm 1.8 prime be good for taking prom pictures?(Im anti-flash)?

The Nikkon 50mm f1.8 is a fine lens, a 1.2 would be better for low light, being 1/2 a stop faster, if you can find one in your price range. Colour balance is the real problem here, with film you have the choice of Daylight or Tungsten though it might be difficult to get fast, tungsten balanced film, but the lighting might be fluorescent (usually green cast, but they can be almost any colour) or even mixed lighting which is a real pain. You could always use B&W of course. but even then some florescent colours make the images ‘flat’, but at least you will get an image and the contrast can be handled at the printing stage. You could try correction filters but as the light levels are low it’s not really an option. If you can get the negatives scanned, or, better yet, use a digital camera, take one picture with a ‘grey card’ in it this will give you a datum for correcting the colour in Photoshop or similar later.
