Would the high oil corn be beneficial in raising 2500 pigs/year farrow to finish?
Many, many acres of High-Oil corn (HOC) was grown in Illinois in 1997 (up from 1996 which was up from 1995). As DuPont has indicated it cost about 7-9 cents per bushel yield for the seed, because about 3,000 more seed have to be planted per acre for the pollinator. You can expect about 6-7% improvement in yield from G-F pigs fed HOC/SBM versus regular corn/SBM diets. Very little difference in ADG. The improvement in performance must be enough to offset the added cost of the HOC (at $0.27 per bushel premium paid). If you will send me your mailing address (send directly to my personal e-mail at hollisg@idea.ag.uiuc.edu) I will send you information on “Value of HOC in Swine Diets”, i.e., how to figure the value.
