WOULD TAX EXEMPTIONS BOOTS THE NUMBER OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN LAOS?
A flowing private schools to operate free of tax is one measure the government should take to raise academic standards and alleviate strains on the public system, says a local Lao philanthropist. The president and founder of the Foundation for Promoting Education, Somphiene Saiyadecth, in an interview with the Vientiane Times, offered his ideas for helping to make Laos a more educated country. Mr. Somphiene believes that increasing the number of private schools indicates a positive move forward. “It’s a firm step in the right direction, but it would be better if all of these new institutions were exempt from paying taxes,” he said. He explained that at the moment there are not enough schools to meet the increasing number of students entering the education system, and the government does not have enough funds in the budget to build new schools.
