Would Repeal of Don Ask, Don Tell Mean Equality for Gay Soldiers?
President Obama’s top military officials, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, will announce before the Senate Armed Services Committee today that they will begin to scale back the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in all branches of the military. Officials, according to the Washington Post, have said that it may take years for gay soldiers to fully integrate into the armed services, but that the administration will put together a group to help the process move forward. Ending the decades-old policy has been one of the Obama administration’s promises, yet many doubt that the government will be able to effectively ensure that homosexual servicemembers will be treated equally among troops.
