RAID 1 would not be any faster than a stand-alone drive and might even be slower, simply because the drive controller has to communicate with more than one drive. Striping (RAID 5) would offer a significant improvement in performance because multiple read and write actions can be performed simultaneously. The bottlenecks for RAID 5 would be the controller, the system bus, the processor, RAM, and so on.
