Would Mergers Solve PC Makers Troubles?
Times are getting tougher for PC makers. Now one noted securities analyst thinks he has a solution that will push the companies closer to their glory days. In the wake of a recent decline in PC sales, Andrew Neff, PC hardware analyst at Bear Stearns & Co., issued a fanciful report Wednesday that includes his guidance for consolidation among the industry’s largest vendors. Calling his report a PC industry “manifesto,” Neff insists changes are needed to fend off years of disappointing financial results. He proposes a radical set of buyouts and mergers among the PC world’s biggest players. “The PC industry is at a critical juncture,” he writes in the report. “Managements and investors need to recognize that the problem is not the end of the PC but slower growth and overcapacity. … It is time for bold moves.
