Would McCains plan prompt individuals to leave employer-sponsored health-insurance plans?

0

Obama claims that McCain’s health plan would “shred” the backbone of the nation’s current health system, employer-sponsored health insurance that provides coverage for nearly 160 million American workers. Both conservative and liberal analysts agree that McCain’s plan likely would bolster individual-insurance providers, in part by attracting younger, healthier workers who chose the tax credit over their current plan. What impact that would have on employer-based coverage remains unclear. McCain representatives have said such a transition would be slow. Others worry that employer plans would be left with a larger percentage of sicker, older workers. Based on interviews with Robert Laszewski, president of Health Policy and Strategy Associates in Alexandria, Va.; Paul Fronstin, senior researcher at Employee Benefit Research Institute; and Dan Coleman, CEO of John C. Lincoln Health Network in Phoenix. Reach the reporter at ken.alltucker@arizonarepublic.com or 602-444-8285.
