Copyright is definitely an issue when you’re *selling* something… much less so or never if you’re making for yourself or giving as gifts. All the images of Harry Potter from the movie, merchandise, etc., are protected by copyright, so you’re in violation if you sell copies of those things. I believe that if you simply buy copyrighted items to put on a bag, etc, you’re okay to sell them. But you can’t make copies (including copying things from the web), then sell them. In other words, you could probably use buttons that you’d purchased with Harry Potter images (since the seller has already paid to use those particular copyrighted images), but you couldn’t print/copy your own images to use in blank buttons, then sell them. You could always draw your own images or create them in other ways, but even some of those could be copyrighted (or trademarked) if they’re fairly close to the original. If you simply drew “a pointed hat,” etc. though, there were many of those generic items before HP
