Would it be more cost effective to buy used computer equipment from companies that are disposing of them?
While there might be some initial savings on the purchase cost, it would make it much less likely that a standard type of equipment could be obtained and therefore the setup and maintenance costs would likely increase. In addition, because the District buys equipment and supplies in high volume, the current price breaks on new products many times makes the cost differential between used and new fairly marginal.
