Would it be feasible to dump nuclear waste into volcanoes?
Anyhows, you want to get rid of nuclear waste? Come to Australia. Not only do we have thousands upon thousands of kilometres worth of empty land, but the soil in much of central Australia is already so naturally radioactive that you would reduce the radioactivity by installing a nuclear waste storage facility. Four Corners had an episode about a proposal along these lines years ago. I recall some outfit called Pangaea who’d done feasibility studies that said the places with the best geology and sparseness of population were Australia and Argentina. After factoring in political stability and existing infrastructure, Australia came out ahead. It would have been a massive PR nightmare to even start promoting it and I never heard much more than that ABC treatment of it. This was to be on a massive scale though. It was to have dwarfed the Yucca mountain proposal in that it could handle everybody’s waste. I’m not so sure it should be dismissed. Australia has the bulk of the world’s uranium a
