Would having sex cause her to have convulsions – like an epileptic attack while actually having sexual intercourse?
David writes: Having researched the recent medical literature, I would say that there doesn’t seem to be any special relationship between epilepsy and sex. I suppose it is theoretically possible that an orgasm could ‘trigger’ an attack, but personally I’ve never, ever seen such a case. I know loads of patients with epilepsy who have good sex lives, so do please try and reassure the lady. She might well get some reassurance and support by joining Epilepsy Action. Christine adds: Yes, I do think that your new girlfriend should be in touch with this excellent association. They have published a booklet with contributions from many women with epilepsy, entitled ‘Epilepsy mine’. If your friend wants a copy she should call Epilepsy Action on: 0113 210 8800. I do hope this new relationship gets off the ground and turns out to be special for both of you.
