Would farmers want rain from a cold front or a warm front?
Warm Front…this because warm fronts will most likely produce stratiform precip…which comes down at a steady rate to allow for maximum absorption into the ground. Cold fronts can create steady precip…but only in stable atmospheric conditions. Cold fronts that occur with only a small amount of atmospheric instability can produce small thunderstorms with brief periods of heavy…thereby causing runoff and not letting it soak into the ground. Cold fronts in areas with high dewpoints…strong moisture advection (horizontal transport of moisture)…can lead to very heavy rainfall totals that can lead to dangerous flash flooding and complete inundation of the ground around rivers.
