Would deregulation be good for Firelands Electric Cooperative?
Firelands’ Board of Trustees has unanimously agreed that it is in the best interests of all of the cooperative’s members to wait. Firelands can participate in deregulation in the future if the members choose to do so, but under the new deregulation law, once we opt in to deregulation, we can’t opt out. Firelands Electric Cooperative’s customers enjoy some of the best electric rates in Ohio. We will continue to provide our customers with low-cost electricity generated by our own power plant. Our goal has always been to provide our customers with the lowest possible electric rates and improve the quality of life in our rural communities. Deregulation is a complex issue, and we expect to see many changes over the next few years as the new marketplace develops.
