Would coffee grounds in the veggie garden help to keep deer and other visitors away?
As far as your veggie garden, about all you can do is put a high enough fence around it so they can’t jump over. Scare crows and other shiny things hanging on sticks work for awhile, but soon they get used to them and are no longer fearful. They are very persistent. Hair is said to work…but it doesn’t work around here. The deer we have in Michigan aren’t afraid of anything. They stamp and snort at our dogs when they bark at them and don’t run until the dogs get too close. I’ve read before that coffee grounds can work, but tried it and it didn’t work for us. Evidently our deer have developed a taste for coffee, because they still continued to chomp away! The best solution for us was to cover the plantings that attracted them with plastic mesh made for this purpose. We keep it in place all winter and remove it when the bushes start to develop buds. The deer don’t seem to bother things in warm weather…too many other good things to graze on out there.
