Would American 18-34 year olds be fit for military service if there was a draft?
Using the current medical standards a lot of them wouldn’t be medically qualified. Just a quick review of many of the questions on this forum concerning medical history and medical conditions will show that is true. There are over 200 conditions which can disqualify a person from military service. The link below contains those standards in Chapter Two. I performed physicals for both enlistment and the draft during Vietnam. And our young men are in much sorrier shape today. The one saving grace was the fact that only 6% of eligible draftees ever donned a uniform during that period. Because, unlike Czechoslovaks, they didn’t feel any desire to serve. Of course, we never had armed tanks of a foreign power rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington like those of the Soviet Union rolling through Wenceslas Square in Prague.
