Bill 101 was a good idea gone wrong, in my opinion. (I know I will get some thumbs down for that but hear me out) There is no denying that the French community in Quebec was suffering from assimilation techniques and being kept subservient before the 1960’s. Canadian companies in Quebec were owned by the English, and French employees were kept in blue-collar positions and paid less than their English counterparts. But the problem with Bill 101 and the language reforms that were introduced was that it tried (and still does to some extent) to “promote” the French language by trampling on other languages. There is an old saying that “…you will attract more flies with honey than you would with vinegar…”. What this means in this case is that you would do better to promote the French language by rewarding people for using it, instead of punishing the ones who choose to use another language, such as English.
