Would a win Saturday be the biggest athletic achievement in Bloomington-Normal history?
It would rank very high, but I don’t think it would be the biggest. I think that distinction belongs to Doug Collins, who as an All-American guard at ISU was an Olympic hero in Munich in 1972 (until the Russians got extra time), was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a senior and was the No. 1 pick in the 1973 NBA draft. His achievements put Illinois State on the map nationally. A win Saturday would give the Redbirds some air time on ESPN and elsewhere, but not have as lasting an impact as Collins. Was Brock Spack a good hire? Yes. He brings a tenacity and toughness that Illinois State needed. He just hasn’t had time to bring in his own players. Spack wants players who have a pit bull mentality, and even hands out a Pit Bull Award at the end of spring practice. He is working to train the current players to play in his image.
