Would a Vizsla make a good first dog?

I agree that vizslas are great dogs, but I’d never recommend them to a first time dog owner, and especially not one with 3 young kids. No way! Intelligent, large breed and extremely ACTIVE dogs are invariably the ones ending up dumped in shelters because people get in way over their heads. They haven’t got time to devote to the exercise or training the dog needs, the dog gets extremely bored and frustrated, that leads to them being destructive. The dog’s then deemed stupid, unruly, untrainable and dumped. Check with shelters and rescues – too many dogs dumped and destroyed are large breeds. I’d select a dog that’s not nearly as high energy, and doesn’t need as “strong” an owner/leader. If you like sporting dogs, perhaps a breed like a clumber spaniel, or even a gordon or english setter, might be a better choice.
