Would a social worker doing home study for foster care be put off by my piercings & tattoos?
A lot will depend on the social worker. I think the odds are against you, I’m afraid. Can you not take at least some of your piercings out temporarily? Although body mods are becoming more and more accepted, there is a line drawn when it comes to more than one facial piercing, as well as tattoos on areas such as the face, head, neck, and hands – especially on women. I applaud you for being brave enough to fight those norms and express yourself in the ways that you choose. And although it’s not fair or right that your unique appearance be so important, that’s just the way it is. My husband is covered in tattoos and he gets nasty looks almost every time we leave the house even though he does not have any on his face, head, or hands. He used to complain about this negative treatment and eventually I told him… look, you did this to yourself. You made the decision. You have to deal with the consequences. Fair or not.
