Would a pyramid of numbers always has same shape as a biomass ?
No it won’t. But a pyramid of energy usually has the same shape as a pyramid of biomass. Pyramid of number shows how many organisms there are in each tropic level. For example, the first tropical level can be 1 tree. The second tropic level can be 10 caterpillars (which feed on the leaves). The third tropic level can be 1 bird (which eats the catepillar). Hence when you draw a number pyramid, you will get something that looks like a beehive (a really small base to represent only 1 tree, a big and wide center to represent 10 caterpillars, and a very small top again to represent 1 bird). Biomass is the combined mass of the organisms in terms of kilocalories of energy. This means that a tree has the largest biomass (compared to all the caterpillars combined or the bird). All the caterpillars combined will have more biomass than a bird, because only 10% of the energy is passed from one tropic level (caterpillars) to the bird. Thus, when you draw a pyramid of biomass, you will get an extrem
