Would a puppy paw at her ears if she had an ear infection?
Pawing at ears could be anything from an itch to mites, to an infection. Infections are marked by her ears being really red on the inside, and may have discharge or a foul smell. Mites are microscopic, and you may not see them. They’ll leave behind a dark waxy buildup, and have a smell to them. Any kind of ear issue should be checked out by a vet- left untreated they can go VERY bad, resulting in your dog needing to be sedated and having their ears lanced and flushed. (And in severe cases, can even result in deafness.) If you have a breed that needs a lot of ear-care (Regular washings) it’s a good idea to have a vet show you how to do so properly.
