Would a black lab/ chow mix make a good dog?

I had a black lab chow mix, and he was the sweetest, smartest, most beautiful dog. One thing about him was that he was very protective of our little girl, he would bite anyone he didn’t know that would get near her and her only, he was also protective of his yard and our family. I refer to him in past tense because he got hit by a car trying to save his dog girlfriend cause she was crossing a busy street, I guess he risked his life for the mother of his children. We still love him very much.
