Won’t street crime increase if the police focus on motoring offences?
Whilst ANPR uses the car number plate as an identifier, there is no specific focus on motoring offences. It is an intelligence-led approach that leads to persons of interest to the police being highlighted and allows officers to focus on them. There is no evidence to suggest that usage of ANPR leads to an increase in street crime. In terms of the deployment of police resources, ANPR will not divert the police from their priorities. Use of ANPR so far has led to the arrest and conviction of criminals for a wide range of serious and volume crime offences.
