With three bass players involved, does Freebass have a very bass-heavy sound?
No. Mani is quite distant from what I’m playing and the three of us swap around a lot anyway. Andy Rourke does play a lot of guitar, Mani’s playing a lot of low bass and I play a lot of my higher, six string bass, like what I did in the early New Order and Joy Division stuff. Are you still in touch with the remaining members of New Order. No. The thing was that for whatever reason it went wrong. None of us were happy. Whether it was my fault or his fault or whoever’s, we chose to end it. It’s not hostile. It’s like a divorce. I got the cat so I’m not bothered. Why’d it go wrong in the end? It was personal reasons that have been quite well documented. A lot of groups do this pantomime where they just turn up and do it on the day. They don’t really think about why they did it or anything, but just stayed doing something anyway. It’s easy to lose touch with why it was there.
