With so much downsizing, outsourcing, creating of boundaryless corporations, etc., will topics like organizational structure be less important in the future?
Certainly these trends will continue. For example, downsizing still occurs in times of increased productivity. As a result, we should take a more fluid approach to the concept of the organization, perhaps using the term “organizing” instead, and think about the social relations and support systems necessary to do the job. Large firms will likely have to provide their workers with more services such as child care and more flexibility through telecommuting (see p. 113). The companies that people most like to work for already do this and more. Individuals, too, will have to add more resources such as knowledge and pension plans.
