With all the concern regarding project financing, will a double-stacked tunnel actually be feasible?
The CHSRA did not eliminate any design options from consideration due to cost alone when the Alternatives Analysis (AA) was released. The AA prepared by the CHSRA is clear that 10 subsections through the Peninsula need to be “stitched together” into a cohesive system, and if the most costly alternatives (such as the tunnel) are selected from San Francisco to San Jose, the project will be infeasible. The CHSRA staff and consultants are now analyzing the constructability of the alignment options presented in the AA. The results of this analysis are currently expected to be released by the end of 2010.
