Some communications systems will fail in a disaster, but rarely will all fail. Cell phones and PDAs that are text (SMS) or email enabled will often retain the ability to deliver text messages when voice messages cannot get through. In an emergency, the larger the number of communications devices you have that are serviced by different phone or Internet service providers, the greater your chances are of getting an emergency message.
