With the passing of the Fourth of July, marking the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by 56 brave men from the original 13 Colonies, we have the remarkable recent event of a most intolerable act that threatens the freedoms won by our forefathers hanging over St. Mary s County like a terrible storm. This past Wednesday, the national network show Good Morning America followed on the heels of WUSA Channel 9 and The Washington Post in probing the organized effort of a group of St. Mary s Sheriff s deputies who, with the knowledge and consent of their boss, went out into the community and stripped news stands of this newspaper the night before the election last November in an attempt to change the outcome of the election in the races for Sheriff and State s Attorney.
