Will Virgin Atlantic actually adopt biofuel for regular use?”
Sir Richard Branson is serious about reducing carbon emissions and his Virgin Airlines has already completed an international flight in a Boeing 747. The Boeing 747-400 flew from London to Amsterdam on Sunday February 24th, carrying in one of its four fuel tanks a 20-percent mix of biofuel derived from coconut and babassu oil. Whether or not it turns out to be successful alternative for commercial airlines remains to be seen, but its a start!
Today biofuel is not economical in large scale operations. Biofuel that comes from agriculture is the most expensive as agriculture it self needs great amounts of fuel to produce biofuel. Biofuel that comes from forestry are largely under development and probably it will not be enough efficient for fossil fuel replacement. So currently we don’t have technology to produce enough biofuel enough cheaply so it would replace fossil fuel usage.
