Will U.S. Unplug Salt Lake City Power Jobs?
May 23–Some 32 Salt Lake City-based workers for the federal agency that produces low-cost, taxpayer-subsidized electrical power could see their jobs disappear in the near future. Two factors are working against the workers: — The Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) is looking at ways to cut its work force and become more efficient. — And, Congress is expected to debate soon whether the government should sell its assets and get out of the power business. WAPA operates dams on Western rivers and sells low-cost power to three dozen communities that operate their own power systems and to rural electric associations (REA).
