Will there be a winner between Firewire, USB or CameraLink-based digital cameras or some other standard?
Why? Combs: For low-end machine vision and high-end scientific applications, Firewire will continue being the strongest. USB will become more competitive, but gigabit Ethernet will soon interfere with its growth. CameraLink will continue to grow and stay ahead in its own high-bandwidth space. Gilblom: No. Each will find its appropriate applications. Zarnowski: CameraLink will most likely be around for a long time simply because of it’s raw throughput capability for higher end applications. Firewire will dominate in the short period but as ruggedized PC’s with USB 2.0 become prevalent, we can expect USB 2.0 to dominate over Firewire, perhaps overtaking Firewire in 2004. Bisson: No definitive winner. FireWire and CameraLink will co-exist. FireWire may win out if a silicon vendor offers 1394b solutions (up to 3.2 Gbps). 18.
