WILL THE U.S. LIFT ITS EMBARGO ON CUBA?
ADAMS: Florida is a key electoral state, and with many Cuban-Americans located in Florida you can bet the Democrats are examining how such a decision would influence their party’s fortunes in the mid-term congressional elections and the next presidential election. Because they are juggling too many hot-potato issues now, I predict that the embargo will stay in 2010. BARNARD: Eventually, but it is unlikely to be a priority in the coming year. In the meantime, the University of Manitoba’s faculty of nursing will continue training Cuban nurses and working to improve that country’s health-care system. SAMPERT: This seems to be the last vestige of the Cold War and now in a time of hyper-globalization, it may be a good time to resume trade with Cuba. Maybe Obama could stem his falling polling numbers by offering Americans Cuba as a cheap tropical vacation location.
