The K5A has long been out of production and is no Kitchenaid service available. They are good machines and some parts are available but the speed control is tough to replace. The K5SS is the newer model of the K5A and it is still serviced. The biggest difference between the two is that the speed control on the A is a rehostat block and the speed cont on the SS is a Solid state unit. The two can not be swapped back and forth, you have what you have. There is a myth that the Hobart Kitchenaids are stronger or better built but it is only a myth, the new 6 qt mixers from Kitchenaid are some of the strongest built that they have ever made, cept of course if you count the Model G, which went out of production in the 40s and is basicly the same machine as the NEW HOBART N50 which retails for about $1400.
