One of the problems I see in Nepal is that the parties seem concerned more about their own agendas than the good of the country, and people seem wedded to ideologies rather than to alleviating the problems their fellow citizens face. The government that should be working on the huge issues facing Nepal is doing little more than standing by while the parties play little games to win momentary and meaningless political points. Had the Maoists not given up their weapons, they would have done nothing but prolong the war and make Nepal’s problems even more dire and more entrenched. They did the right thing by laying down their weapons and joining the democratic process – but they have to recognize that they cannot expect it to be winner-takes-all. The people didn’t vote to impose Maoism on the country – they voted to include the Maoists in a democratically elected government representing a variety of viewpoints.
