Will the iPhone touchscreen technology eventually replace the mouse on laptops / desktops?
This was selected as Best Answer I guess it’s all about relevant or usable interaction. The reason the iPhone touchscreen technology works, is that it’s comfortable and intuitive. Held in the hand, with limited need for detailed cursor control at the pixel level, it serves the interaction needs required for that form factor. In a desktop situation where the display is anywhere from 18 to 30 inches away, a new, more comfortable way of interacting with the screen might evolve, but I doubt if this technology would be relevant to that effort. If the touchscreen you are viewing becomes the interface, as in touch screen Kiosks, one has to factor ergonomic stress to the arm (suspended uncomfortably in mid air for anything more than a few minutes) and it is quickly dismissed as an usable interaction for most desktop applications.
